BEAWARE of ONSTAR and AIR CANADA ! Things you need to know before you decide to signup with ONSTAR or AIR CANADA !

I had a HUGE problem today with OnStar and Air Canada, below you will find the complete review and complaint on Onstar and Air Canada.

I will remove this post ONLY if I get compensated for my time that I spent writing this article, the headache and stress I went through, gas I wasted driving to the wrong directions that Onstar provided me with, phone calls I made from my cell phone trying to deal with this issue, and few other things, if you are a rep from Onstar or Air Canada who is willing to resolve this and compensate me you may post your contact info in the comments section below and I will contact you, if this post is still here it means no one cared to contact me to resolve this.

Below you will find the details of this complaint:

On Nov 10, 2010, I rented a Vehicle from Budget car rental located at Edmonton International airport, the vehicle was equiped with Onstar, I used OnStar to get help on how to get to destinations since the vehicle did not come with a GPS.

The way Onstar works is by pressing the Onstar button located right under the rear view mirror, then you are connected with the customer service of onstar where you can talk to them live via your vehicle speakers and built in Onstar microphone, then you advise the Onstar representative of which location you want to go to and they will download this information right to your vehicle, once the information is sent to your vehicle, your vehicle will guide you through its speakers on how to get to your destination that you had requested by providing turn by turn directions.

Today Sunday November 14,2010 is my last day in Edmonton, Alberta so I got into the rental car and pressed the Onstar button, a female representative answered and I asked her to send me directions on how to get to Edmonton International Airport, the directions took me to the wrong airport ! They sent me to a small airport of Cessna aircrafts which is the Edmonton Municipal Airport !!! I was very upset and angry when I found out they sent me to the wrong location after I waisted one hour of driving for nothing, so then I pressed the Onstar button and a male representative answered and I advised the representative that they sent me to the wrong airport when I clearly asked to be directed to Edmonton Intl Airport, I asked the representative to send me directions to the new airport ASAP. and also requested him to contact Edmonton International Airport and speak to Air Canada and advise them that I and my friend who is traveling with me will be late for our flight because of the wrong directions I was given by Onstar, I also advised the Onstar repressive that if I miss my flight I will be taking this to a step higher and take a legal action against Onstar, the representative advised me that he can not call the airport for me because he doesn't have their phone number, I asked him to go to google and find it from there and he said he doesn't have access to google !!! Can you believe this ??? Onstar does NOT have access to google or internet ??? WOW.

So I said to him ok fine, just send me the information to my vehicle on how to get to Edmonton International Airport ASAP.

Guess what! After 30 minutes of driving and following the directions he sent me, I find myself in the middle of nowhere and there is no airport around me !!!

So I press the Onstar button for the third time and I speak to another representative who was very nice enough to send me the right directions to the right airport and I advised him of what I've been through and that I won't be able to make it on time to the airport, and asked him if he can call Edmonton International Airport for me to advise them that I will be late because of what Onstar did to me and he told me that its not a problem at all, he asked me of which airline I am traveling with and I told him Air Canada and he said he will call them to inform them I will be late.

So I called Air Canada myself as well and told them I will be late, the Air Canada representative said that its fine and that there is another flight I can go to which is at 12am, I advised him that my ticket is business class, and asked if I will be put in business class as well, he said yes and assured me there are lots of business class and also economy seats available and that its impossible that they will be sold out, so I told him that I'll think about what I will do and call back.

I spoke to my friend and we decided to go back to my friends house in Edmonton then we will call Air Canada to change the flight.

I called Air Canada when I got home and spoke to Denise and now she tells me that they can NOT change the flight for me, because it was booked through Aeroplan and I would have to speak to Aeroplan in order to change the flight! And not only that but the Air Canada representative Denise told me the flight at 12am is fully booked!!! WOW!! What a great evening, first its Onstar, then now Air Canada! Why at first the Air Canada representative told me there are a lot of seats in that flight then later I hear a completely different story ?!?!? Saying the flight is completely booked and even if I wanted to change the flight I won't be able to do it with them, and that I have to go through aeroplan instead, why are the customer service of both Onstar and Air Canada so stupid and Uneducated people ???

If you or know anyone who had a problem, complaints, reviews, about Air Canada or Onstar then please post your story in the comments section below.

Never rely on ONSTAR, they are crap! you should have used a GPS instead, Onstar is just a waste of money, when the time comes where you need them they will really show you how they will treat you, a perfect example is what happened to you.

That second guy you spoke to, that sent you in the middle of no where, I bet he did that on purpose just to piss you off and to seek revenge on you. ;)

This is already appearing on Google #1 page! Using many search keywords, an example of one of them is onstar complaints or air canada complaints

This story will now be sent via email to the CEO's of Onstar and Air Canada.

If its not resolved and settled then in a few days later, it will be forwarded to competitors of Onstar and Air Canada, so they can be aware of this and also at the same time to seek advise from these competitors and it will also be copied to several other complaint and blog sites.

And its already on first page of google so the longer it stays there the more it will affect their business, so the faster they come to a settlement the faster this is removed and stopped.

We live in a country with laws of freedom of speech, and we have the right to voice our concerns public, I spent a lot of time writing this story, now I'm stuck here in Edmonton until November 16,2010 because there was no available business class flight until November 16, shame on Onstar and Air Canada !!!!! So yes I do believe they owe me a compensation for the money and time this costed me.

I hope things work out for you and it is really unfortunate that a company like ON Star and Air Canada will treat their customers this way.

I actually wanted to join and now that i have found this post will think twice before I do!! I also called their 1.888 number and couldn't get through to anyone???!! What if I had locked my keys in my car and needed someone to let me in???!! Really? I'm glad that their are people out there who share their experiences with us so that we can make proper decisions when purchasing a product! because we are customers! Hope you finally resolve your problems and know that you changed one more persons mind from joining onstar!

I'm reading this and thinking "how lucky I have been" with OnStar....twice in the past year I had a flat tire....I pushed the button and instantly had help on the line. A tow truck was called for me, I was given free minutes to call Family to let them know I would be late, and they even called me back 1/2 hour later to make sure the tow truck had arrived and changed the tire for me. I guess I was one on the lucky ones....

Help my understand why we need onstar in this day and age of cell phones and GPS?

PS- along with this complaint...NEVER use Virgin Mobile?Bell Canada for cell phone. Little to no customer help. I have dropped calls at home...to the point I never use my iphone...now its dropping calls through out Lethbridge. I know its a smaller city...but if you can't cover this area...DON'T SELL YOUR PHONES!!!

I have left over 5 messages for Nash at Virgin to call my back...with no answer. I guess he is in Toronto. Ever since Bell bought out Virgin...they have gone down hill...AVOID VIRGIN/BELL. research it...you will find countless blogs on it.

I have never had any issues with OnStar.. is for my peace of mind more then for directions. I use maps and don't pay for the map/direction feature of the service. I like the availability of the hands free calling and can call anyone for directions myself. And the rescue/emergency package is more then adequate. As with any service you pay for...investigate it first.

Sorry to hear about your poor service issues with these companies. Thanks for posting, gives us pause when looking at them.
Definitely need to research Cell companies before signing with them, they all have issues.

Honestly, I work as a PSW and have different clients every day, I always use onstar and the only issue I've had is them not being able to find a new development which they got me to a nearby intersection. Everytime I ask for directions, they confirm what ive said once, if not twice just before then send it to me. Also in their defence, Edmonton municipal is right downtown, while Edmonton intl is in the middle of no where.

P.S- Regarding your comment about google, because its a american company if google/public search engines are available then the company can charge Onstar/any other company, so they probably don't have access.

I do understand that u had a bad experiance with Onstar, but to call the reps stupid and uneducated people is a little much...

I use to work for them and I hated it!

To be yelled at on a constant basis from people you don't know, to work 11hr shifts 5 days a week and then work a 4hr mandatory shift with no over time included, to never get the time off you wanted, to be yelled at by your team leaders for taking longer on the phone for helping someone in need, to be yelled at for taking to long in the washroom, to be yelled at for taking a drink break even tho your mouth is dryer then the desort, to only get 15mins paid break for an 11hr shift, to work from 1pm to 12am only to go back to work for 6am, to never see your kids, family or friends, to be under so much stress from work that you misscary your pregnancy....

and you want to call us dumb/stupid/uneducated?

I wont lie there were times I sent people in the total wrong direction just for the way they spoke to me, and then there were times I went above and behond my job duties to help someone
it all goes on the way you speak to people if your nice so are they...

oh and btw Onstar for Canada sucks! half of the places dont show up, its ment for America and thats really where it should stay..

Hey I've been an advisor at OnStar for a long time and i can tell you i have heard stories like this before. The situation above should not have happened and although i'm just a lowly advisor I do apologize :( Unfortunately not every advisor is as experienced or skilled as the next and some are just more prone to make stupid mistakes that end up inconveiniencing and disrupting people's day to day lives. Its unfortunate but human error will always exsist especially with a product like OnStar which is completely customer service based. Some tips - If you are going to a business or major landmark and want to ensure we're sending you to the right place...it helps to know a little bit about where you're going..either by having the address or just having a basic idea of where it is.if you get the address we'll confirm it with you which will give you piece of mind. Don't be afraid to ask us questions about the route its taking you on. we can always create an alternate route if you don't like what you hear. We will call businesses for you if its nessesary to confirm times or...just need to talk to them. I know this is all of little help to you after the fact but we have improved the way we assist our callers.

Although I used to assist with directions, I'm now an emergency advisor and I can tell you from that I have personally assisted in the saving of lives of hundreds of people accross North America, who without OnStar would be in much worse shape. i take calls daily of parents who have locked their infants in the car, or people out in the middle of no where with no cell phone reception requiring immediate medical assistance, or serious injury accidents where without OnStar the vehicles would never have been found. So although we are not perfect I do stand behind OnStar as an invaluable tool when you need help in the most unforseen situations....just thought i'd share :)

Every company has days that things don't work perfectly...because all companies are run by fallible people....it just happens....I actually work for OnStar and believe it does more good than harm...I appreciate the companies values and believe in the service that we provide....it is unfortunate that you had a bad day and experienced these problems with OnStar and Air Canada and I do hope that the situation has been resolved for you!!

Navigating requires common sense, research, and planning ahead. Don't blame onstar and air canada for your lack of planning. If I represented onstar or air canada I wouldn't compensate you either.

USA==Safe and Sound for 12 months is $199US
Canadian==Safe and Sound for 12 months is $289 Canadian. As of Sept 12th the difference in currency is one US dollar will buy you $.99 Canadian dollars. $99 dollars difference for this service? How many times does a new Chevrolet break down in one year? Unlock one door and have one accident. That's $100 a minutes. Not event Telus charges rates like that.

I activated the On Star on my new vehicle this evening. I have a free promo for six months. When I first pressed the button it took about an minute before a rep answered. He asked if I was doing my "Welcome Call" I didnt know what he was speaking of but went along with it.
Having a promo with my previous vehicle I had an idea how On Star worked. The rep was explaining all the feature and then came the up sell of the calling minutes. He certainly wasnt going to take no for an answer. I told him having bluetooth on my cell was good enough but again it wasnt good enough for him. I was about ready to disconnect and he moved on. Next question, Do I want to have a credit card on file??? NO, was my response!! Frankly, had I provided my credit card, I wonder how many minutes I would have "purchased"
I do own a GSP and will use the On Star for the six months. The end of the Promo will be the end of the On Star for me.

Cars equipped with OnStar are supposed to have sensors so that if you're in a collision they will contact you in the vehicle to see what help you require, but my wife was in a minor accident last year where she hit a car in front of her, then was rear-ended by another car, and OnStar never called her in the car! She had to call them to request a tow. Might as well just have a GPS and a car club membership instead.

I live in northern BC and have tried using the onstar navigation option to see if it was accurate. Was not overly impressed at all. Requested directions to Vanderhoof BC but the rep could only come up with Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako for a name. However, driving instructions did get me to where I wanted to go. Fortunately I knew in advance where I was headed and just wanted to see how accurate the service was. For someone unfamiliar with names of towns, cities, regional districts, etc. I think they would have been screwed.

I have tried three separate times to get a local phone number from onstar. Needless to say, it has been a waste of time. I live in northern BC and the first number was for Vancouver area. When I called back and explained that I wanted a Vanderhoof exchange, they gave me a number for Kamloops. Third call managed to get me a Prince George number. Close but still no cigar. Call number 4 to an agent in Michigan... I explained the problem and he promised to personally get back to my within 3 days with a Vanderhoof number. 2 weeks have passed and not a peep. Thinking it's time to cancel all the onstar services, use my personal cell and gps. On another note, I was signed up for directions/connections plan and dropped down to safe/sound plan. about 3 weeks ago. Logged into my account and plan still has not been changed as requested. Gotta love Customer Service aka Customer Unservice

I cancelled my Onstar account in May 2012,I had payments taken off monthly on my Mastercard, in June they took another payment off my card, July the same. I phoned Onstar billing and asked to talk to a supervisor who said she would straighten it out ,cancel my account and refund me my money
it Never happened they took money in August September and Oct. I phoned Master card each and every month, got my refund and have since cancelled my Mastercard as this was the only way to stop Onstar. Each month I also phoned Onstar with the same negative results.
